Fluxor was a concept I developed for the Building Woman Festival in Green River, Utah, in May 2023. Born from upcycled materials (aka jenk) found at the eclectic Jenkstar Ranch, where the festival took place, Fluxor embodies creativity, sustainability, and interactivity.
The project began in April 2023 with Phase 1, where I built the base structure and a simplified version of the head. A year later, in April 2024, I returned for Phase 2, adding wings, LED lighting, a sculpted belly, and mechanical elements that allow the head to move and the jaws to snap shut.
The body is constructed from an industrial farm drum structure, while the head—crafted from a steel barrel and wheelbarrow parts—is accentuated with scrap steel elements like saw blades and engine components. Designed for full audience engagement, anyone can climb onto her back and become the Dragon Master! Fluxor’s fierce presence comes to life with a movable head, snapping jaws, and the ability to breathe fire over the crowd at the main stage. The interactivity extends beyond fire—whoever finds her egg in the crowd gains control over the LEDs illuminating her wings and body. Shoutout to @mickymakes.art for collaborating with me on the LED system!
Beyond designing and welding the entire structure, I also engineered and built the propane poof effect, bringing my passion for large-scale interactive art to life. This project remains one of my all-time favorites, blending sculpture, mechanics, fire effects, and audience participation. Huge thanks to Scotty Soltronic for his guidance, access to incredible jenk, and the creative freedom to make this piece truly badass.
Fluxor now resides at Jenkstar Ranch, lighting up the night at various festivals and parties held there.
